Keep Your Skin Glowing While Wearing a Mask

Sometimes being a good citizen means dealing with maskne. There's no doubt you’ve seen the countless tips and recommendations for all the serums and spot treatments out there. Don’t get me wrong- these things work, but you can only put so much on your skin. That’s why it’s important to get ahead of the game by incorporating a few changes regarding how you care for your skin.

Face masks create an occlusive barrier to the skin that create the perfect environment for the oil and bacteria that cause acne. This means your biggest goal in the fight against maskne is to make sure you’re cleansing properly.

Washing your face at the end of the day is important no matter what, especially after wearing anything that's covered your face. It’s best to wash your face at least once a day, and ideally at night. Don’t overcomplicate it- use your favorite cleanser and one that’s best suited for your skin type.

How Adding Cotton to Your Routine Can Help

An underrated yet versatile beauty tool, cotton pads have been around forever. At some point they fell out of favor, replaced by trendier, more expensive alternatives. With all the new beauty tools coming out, it’s no surprise that we seem to forget that sometimes the best thing for our skin is the simplest. So how exactly will cotton help maskne?

Using a cotton pad is actually one of the best ways to apply your cleanser and wash your face.  You can apply your cleanser to a cotton pad and gently wipe over your face, rubbing slightly as you go, before rinsing off with water. Textured cotton pads, such as NAKED COTTON Textured break up the dirt, oils, and dead skin cells on our face more efficiently than exfoliating with a traditional scrub.  This is accomplished by creating a gentle friction that won’t irritate the skin.

Not all cotton pads are the same, however. Some leave lint, some have abrasive textures that are too rough on the skin, and others are made with harsh chemicals.  Quality matters. A good cotton pad is one that is 100% natural and unbleached. With the right one you can cleanse your face just as well as any face brush or tool can.

You can also wear a cotton pad under your face mask to create another barrier. Cotton naturally wicks away moisture and by placing it between your face and mask, it can help absorb and helps prevent maskne. Its soft texture won’t irritate the skin, either. You can even place it over your face after applying makeup to keep the fabric of your mask clean.

Keep these tips in mind the next time you're struggling with maskne. Changing the way you cleanse is simple, effective, and sanitary- the three exact things you need to fight acne and stay safe
